The APP reports: Lakewood Police have arrested and charged a woman they say is likely connected to about two dozen burglaries and the theft of a motor vehicle, Chief Robert C. Lawson told the Asbury Park Press.
Detective Sgt. William Rodriguez charged Jessica McDaniel, 22, of Joda Drive, Lakewood, with multiple counts of burglary, theft and theft of a motor vehicle. McDaniel was apprehended following a call to police about a suspicious person walking through backyards about 5 a.m. Monday in Coventry Square, Lawson said.
McDaniel was taken into custody after a foot chase by Patrolman Kevin Doyle, who had spotted her after residents reported a woman walking through yards near Shemen Street, Lawson said.
McDaniel remained in the Ocean County Jail Thursday in lieu of $50,750 cash bail.
About half the homes McDaniel targeted were in the Coventry Square section, Lawson said.
McDaniel admitted that she was responsible for six burglaries in which she took cash and purses, police said. She admitted that in one burglary on Tudor Court Monday, in addition to cash and a purse, she stole car keys and the car, Lawson said.
McDaniel was involved in a crash with that car, which she drove away from, police said. She later parked the car and was walking between yards when she was seen by police, they said.
Police received and executed a search warrant for the home of McDaniel's mother on Joda Drive following her arrest, Lawson said.
Police said they are hoping to solve about two dozen burglaries through this investigation, Lawson said.
Almost every victim of the burglaries had left doors or windows of their homes unlocked, Lawson said.
Police said that McDaniel would either open an unlocked door or crawl in through an unlocked window to get into the home. If she encountered a locked door or window she moved on to the next home, Lawson said.
Police have urged every resident to be vigilant about locking doors and windows in their homes.
