New Jersey residents who want to air their opinions on a plan to raise tolls on the New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway will have their chance tonight.
The Star Ledger reports: The NJ State Turnpike Authority is scheduled to hold its first of three public hearings on the proposal, which aims to raise about $11 billion to pay for transportation projects including widening the Turnpike and Parkway and the state's share of another rail tunnel under the Hudson River. The increases would boost the cost of a typical 23-mile trip on the Turnpike from $1.20 to $1.80 next year and to $3 after 2023.
Tonight's hearing is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. at Camden County Community College in Blackwood. Two more hearings are scheduled for Wednesday, from 9 a.m. to noon, at the Turnpike Authority headquarters in Woodbridge; and from noon to 3 p.m., at Bergen Community College in Paramus.
Those who cannot attend the meetings can submit comments by e-mail to info@turnpike.state.nj.us
Gov. Jon Corzine, who proposed steeper toll hikes earlier this year -- as much as 800 percent during 14 years -- as part of a dramatic effort to restructure state finances, said he does not plan to attend this week's hearings. He said he will review the feedback that comes out of the hearings before deciding whether to approve the plan.
