Prime Minister Ehud Olmert opened his Sunday morning weekly cabinet meeting by congratulating his successor, Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, on her recent success in the Kadima leadership race.
Mr. Olmert announced that on Sunday evening at 7:30PM he will officially present his letter of resignation to President Shimon Peres. At that time, the government will become a transition government.
Olmert told his cabinet that he is making a difficult but correct decision, adding his government has some significant accomplishments and he is confident history will record his tenure as one to be proud of.
The president is scheduled to meet with Kadima leaders at 8:10PM, and he is expected to place the responsibility of forming a new coalition on Kadima leader Tzipi Livni.
