Long Island, NY: 4th Death From West Nile Virus Reported

A 60-year-old Long Island woman has died after becoming infected with the West Nile virus.

Nassau County Health Department officials say the Merrick resident was hospitalized with symptoms of the virus from August until her death on Tuesday.

This is the fourth death in Nassau County this year from the West Nile virus. Infected mosquitoes transmit the virus to human through bites.

Health Department officials, in a statement, also reported a new case of the virus in an 80-year-old Garden City man, bringing the total of confirmed West Nile virus cases in Nassau to 13. Two Suffolk residents have contracted the virus, while five others are suspected to have it.
