Wall Street Woes Continue: Dow Drops 189 Points

Stocks closed lower after swinging wildly all day as a coordinated global rate cut failed to reassure investors.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average alternated between triple-digit gains and equal-sized losses before ending down 189 points a to close at 9,258.00 as the markets continued to worry about the growing credit crisis.

Uncertainty pervaded the trading day, begun early when when the rate-cut news broke.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average slid 189.01 points, or 2.00%, to 9258.10.
The S&P 500 Index lost 11.29 points, or 1.13%, to 984.94.
The Nasdaq Composite dropped 14.55 points, or 0.83%. to 1740.33.
