NYS Senate Poised To Fight Term Limits Extension

NYS Senate Poised To Fight Term Limits Extension

Congestion pricing, the West Side Stadium, Albany has already done its share to kill Mayor Michael Bloomberg's most ambitious plans.

Now state lawmakers could throw a roadblock in front of the mayor's plan to run for a third term.

The New York Times says Brooklyn State Senator Kevin Parker plans to introduce legislation today that would prevent city officials from running for a third term without the approval of voters.

The legislation may not be successful, but the Times says Democratic Leader Malcolm Smith is not opposed to allowing the legislation come to a vote.

This comes a day after Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver expressed similar feelings about an identical bill introduced in the State Assembly by Brooklyn Assemblyman Hakeem Jeffries.

Silver said yesterday he is not ready to take a stance on the issue.

The bill adds a clause making it retroactive to ensure that if passed, it would undo the recent extension of city term limits.

The Times says the city could sue if the bill passes the state Legislature.
