New Yorkers received a shock this morning when a 'special edition' of their newspaper of record, the New York Times, displayed the screaming headline 'IRAQ WAR ENDS.'
Oh, and America's other problems were well on the way to being solved too, from energy and health care to the sagging economy.
That's according to a spoof edition of The New York Times, dated July 4, 2009.
Some 1.2 million copies of the fake 14-page newspaper were handed out during morning rush hour by dozens of volunteers liberal pranksters who call themselves the Yes Men.
The parody paper also announces the abolition of corporate lobbying and a maximum wage for CEOs. And there's a recall notice for all cars that run on gasoline.
The group, which was the subject of a 2004 documentary, have conducted pranks around the world, in one case appearing on the BBC as a Dow Chemical spokesman to announce a $12bn payout to the victims of the Bhopal disaster.
Other 'victims' have included the WTO, New Orleans mayor Ray Nagin and ExxonMobil.
A call and e-mail to The New York Times weren't immediately returned.
