FDA May Pull 2 Popular Asthma Meds Off Shelves

FDA May Pull 2 Popular Asthma Meds Off Shelves

Two popular asthma drugs may be pulled off store shelves after a Food and Drug Administration panel says they're simply too risky for you to take.

The FDA had been considering calls to pull four popular asthma drugs from the market after studies found patients taking them were at higher risk of some serious side effects, including respiratory problems and even death.

After two days of testimony, advisors are recommending Serevent and Foradil no longer be used to treat asthma. They spared Advair and Symbicort from their recommendation.

All four drugs contain ingredients to relax tight muscles around narrowed airways, but that may mask symptoms that can trigger life-threatening attacks.

The two drugs the FDA says are still safe, Advair and Symbicort, contain a second ingredient that reduces inflammation inside breathing passages that may help patients avoid problems.

Some doctors urged the FDA not to pull the drugs, saying it could trigger a dangerous surge in cases of uncontrolled asthma, especially in children.

But Advair, the most popular of the medications remains on the market and may be used as an alternative for patients on the drugs that are slated to be discontinued.
