NY1 is currently reporting the following exclusive story:
ANYC firefighter has been arrested on charges that made false alarms, NY1 has learned.
The Fire Department says that the firefighter has been arrested for making several false alarm calls to Ladder 53 on City Island one of four firehouses set to close during the overnight hours due to budget cuts.
According to the FDNY, the calls started shortly after the announcement of the overnight closure.
"Without getting into the motivation, what we do know is that a firefighter made false reports and caused false reports to be made," said Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta. "He's arrested and charged with a felony of making a false report and that carries a maximum sentence of seven years. My own comment is that this is simply outrageous."
Scoppetta says that the firefighter has not yet been arraigned.
"Anytime you have firefighters leaving the station, you are doing two things; one, there's a certain amount of danger just getting to an emergency as fast as we do this and, two, you're taking a unit away from what may be a real emergency where someone is having a heart attack or there is a fire," said the fire commissioner.
What is not yet clear is what type of calls were made.
No information about the firefighter has yet to be released.
