According to a report released by Ladaat.net, avreichim in the Yechavei Da'as Kollel on Agassi Street in Har Nof, Jerusalem are carrying their weapons in response to current intelligence warnings that kollelim and mosdos torah are being targeted by terrorists.
The kollel is run by Rav Dovid Yosef Shlita, and it is pointed out, that until recently, when Rav Ovadia Shlita took ill, he would give a weekly shiur in the kollel and the Rav Shlita hopes to resume this minhag in the near future.
It should be pointed out that the kollel is taking the security issue seriously in light of recent intelligence reports of threats, and towards improving the situation in Yechavei Da'as, doors are kept locked, and the gates to the premises are now opened by electronic locks, requiring students to know the code. Glass on certain doors has been replaced by stronger tempered alternatives and avreichim are generally more tuned in to security concerns.
According to the report, eight avreichim with licensed weapons have been instructed to bring the weapons to the beis medresh as an added measure of security. Kollel officials the move is in line with instructions received from security agencies.
In line with the concerns, MK Rav Meir Porush has turned to Public Security Minister Avi Dichter, asking him to call for an evaluation of security in yeshivas and kollelim around the country. This follows an inspection made of a number of mosdos Torah in Yerushalayim, revealing some of the institutions lack even the most basic security.
