According to The Chronicle of Philanthropy, no living American gave more money to charity last year than Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
The survey says the mayor donated $235 million last year.
Bloomberg donated to more than 1,200 groups associated with the arts, education and health care research.
His giving increased from 2007, when he donated $205 million.
Bloomberg actually ranked ninth overall on the list. He was topped by eight others who died last year and gave greater amounts away in their wills.
The late real-estate queen Leona Helmsley was ahead of Bloomberg. She gave away $5.2 billion � most of which went to the dog-friendly causes.
