JUST IN: Paterson Appoints Gillibrand To Fill Senate Seat

Gov. David Paterson at a noon press conference officially announced his choice of Democratic Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand to fill the state's vacant U.S. Senate seat, a day after Caroline Kennedy abruptly withdrew from consideration.

Paterson, with Gillibrand to his right and many of New York's high powered politicians behind him, introduced the 42-year-old to Albany and the state.

Paterson called it his 'privilege and honor' to propel forward the duty of 'transferring power' democratically and justly.

"On Tuesday we saw one president replace another, today, again, there is a transfer of power," said Paterson.

Gillibrand, beginning her second term from upstate New York's 20th Congressional District, will be named to fill the seat vacated when Hillary Rodham Clinton resigned to become secretary of state in the Obama administration, the aide said. The formal announcement is scheduled for midday Friday.

Some liberal downstate Democrats were upset after the initial news spread of the governor's choice.

She was considered one of the top contenders in Paterson's selection process, along with Kennedy and state Attorney General Andrew Cuomo.

Paterson's appointment lasts until 2010, when a special election will be held to fill the final two years of Clinton's term.
