The Belz Machzikei Hadas Beis Din convened this week in Kiryat Belz together with leading shatnez experts in Eretz Yisrael. The dayonim Shlita also conference called with dayonim in America as they discussed the shatnez issue in talleisim (reported HERE on YWN), delving into the halachic and logistical ramifications of the alarming discovery.
The dayonim ruled anyone who wears a "terkisha" tallis must check it for shatnez immediately. The beis din's ruling instructed chassidim to check the talleisim immediately, adding those talleisim chas v'sholom found to be posul entitle the owner to return it to the store to request a replacement free of charge. The talleisim that do not have shatnez but are found to have foreign strands of non-wool [other than polyester] may be used. If however most of the tallis contains fibers other than wool, one should purchase a new tallis. A tallis with a minority of polyester is good and one may make a bracha - but if most of the garment contains polyester, it is posul, unfit for a bracha, and one may demand a replacement from the place of purchase.
Those who are stringent and wish only a 100% wool tallis and find their tallis may contain a minority amount of foreign strands may approach the beis din for a ruling regarding a store's responsibility to replace the tallis free of charge.
According to a report in the daily HaMevaser, the Skvere Beis Din ruled that if a tallis is found to contain non-wool, it is preferable to purchase a new one, one that has an excellent hechsher. The Skvere Beis Din added that anyone who learned his tallis contains shatnez should fast, or redeem the fast by giving tzedaka, the amount equivalent to the cost of the tallis.
The Belzer Beis Din instructed Rav Mordechai Brisk to seek out a factory in Eretz Yisrael suitable to manufacture the talleisim in accordance to Belz specifications and under the Machzikei Hadas hechsher.
The beis din expressed the hope that they will soon succeed closing a deal with a factory in Eretz Yisrael that will comply with the halachic and traditional Belz stringencies and manufacture talleisim in accordance to minhagei Belz in compliance to the strictest halachic dictates, thereby eliminating the need for imports as has been the case in the past.
