At least two people were killed in a second-alarm fire in a Lawrence apartment, where numerous children were rescued by firefighters.
The fire reportedly broke out in an apartment above a laundromat, on Lawrence Avenue, just before 5:45 a.m. Heavy flames shot through the structure.
Eyewitness News is told at least two people were reported dead at the scene, and there were an unknown number of people believed still unaccounted for.
Meanwhile, at least four children were rescued from the apartment.
Officials say they were rushed to nearby Mercy Medical Center in Rockville Centre in unknown condition.
The intersection of Lawrence Avenue and Mill Street was closed for the police investigation.
Six fire departments -- Lawrence-Cedarhurst, Inwood, Meadowmere Park, Woodmere, Lynbrook, Long Beach and Elmont -- were at the scene.
It does not appear that Misaskim services wererequired for this tragic incident.
