Yemen Court Says Gunman Who Killed Jew Unstable

A Yemeni court ruled on Monday that a Muslim man who shot dead a Jewish man was mentally unstable and sent him to a psychiatric institution, but the victim's father said he would appeal the verdict.

The court, which also fined Abdul-Aziz al-Abdi 5.5 million riyals ($27,500), said the sentence was based on a report that concluded the murder suspect was schizophrenic.

The victim's father Yehiya bin Yaeesh rejected the ruling, saying his son Mashaa was in the company of four men -- all Muslims -- when he was shot in the town of Raida in December, and had clearly been targeted.

"If they were to give me the whole of (Yemen's capital) Sanaa I would not accept this sentence," Yaeesh said.

There are an estimated 200 to 300 Jews in Yemen, remnants of a community that spoke a form of ancient Hebrew. About 50,000 have moved to Israel since 1949.

Yemen has been battling Islamic militants for years and has grappled with a spate of attacks on Western targets this year, including two on the U.S. embassy.
